Experts warn of return of browntail moth to New Hampshire

MANCHESTER, N.H. —

It might not sound all that threatening based on its name, but entomologists say the browntail moth, which has just been spotted again in New Hampshire, is nothing to be messed with.

At Fox Forest in Hillsborough, officials with the New Hampshire Division of Forests and Lands collect bugs. They have examples of more than 3,000 insects collected in the Granite State, but right now, they're focused on the browntail moth.

"So, out on Star Island, we collected some of the winter webs of browntail moth," said Kyle Lombard, of the Division of Forests and Lands.

The browntail moth has resided largely in southern Maine for decades, but the staff at Fox Forest has been waiting for it to re-emerge in New Hampshire.
